Ditch Plastic Bottles To Save The Planet And Your Body

by Anant Khare 26 Feb 2022

We are sure you’ve heard it all before. Bottled water is bad for the environment, it’s unhealthy, the junk from the bottle can leach into your water. Whether you are aware of it or not, plastic bottles are bad for you and the planet. Did you know that a plastic bottle can take up to 1,000 years to decompose in a landfill? If that's not enough to make you run around telling everyone about it then how about this, almost a million plastic bottles are bought every minute. That's a lot of trash, isn't it?

Still not convinced? Here are some reasons that’ll change your mind:

Environmental impact:

Plastic Pollution

Plastic is also made from crude oil and natural gas. The process of extracting these materials is not only costly but can have a great deal of environmental impact.

Plastic takes anywhere from 20 to 1,000 years to decompose, and when it does decompose it does not biodegrade into harmless material as many people think. Instead, plastic breaks apart into smaller pieces called microplastics that pollute our oceans and water supply as well as the seafood we eat.

Because so much of our plastic waste ends up in landfills, it causes problems with groundwater contamination as well as air pollution from landfill fires. When plastic breaks down in landfills, it releases methane gas which is extremely harmful to the environment and to humans through its effect on global warming.

Health impact:

Plastic bottles are made from chemicals that leach into the water. These chemicals build up in human bodies and can cause a number of serious health problems.

Additives to make plastic bottles flexible, durable and transparent also make them dangerous when ingested into the body. Some of these chemicals are carcinogenic and many others have never been researched for their effects on the human body.

People who ingest a large amount of bottled water on a regular basis have higher levels of bisphenol A (BPA) and other toxins in their bodies than people who do not drink bottled water. The more you drink, the worse it gets. Toxins can contribute to high blood pressure, heart disease and diabetes by disrupting hormone functions in the body.

What’s the solution?

Plastic bottle isn’t the only form of plastic that’s polluting the planet but it sure is one of the major causes. We might not be able to retrieve all the waste that has already accumulated in the oceans and landfills but we can definitely do our part by switching to reusable products. The Better Home’s range of stainless steel bottles were created keeping that in mind.
